Catalyzing Economic Growth: The Critical Role of Incubators in Youth Entrepreneurship

A year ago today, I had the absolute privilege of sitting on the judging panel for the Research and Innovation Pitch Challenge at Lead City University, Ibadan. Looking back, the experience remains a powerful reminder of where the true wealth of our nation lies. 💡🇳🇬

We listened to incredibly bright young minds pitch disruptive, innovative ideas capable of moving both the university and our country forward. The raw potential in that room was undeniable. However, as any seasoned entrepreneur knows, a great idea is only the first step. What these students needed next was rigorous mentoring, commercial direction, and a strategic framework—a responsibility the university commendably took on post-event.

Huge kudos to the convener, Mrs. Deborah Adejobi, for organizing such a stellar initiative. It was an honor to share the panel with an array of eminent personalities and thought leaders: Reuben Kalu, Professor Teslim Ashafa, Dr. Aderinto, and Mrs. Adeola Balogun. Your insights and constructive feedback to the students were masterclasses in themselves.

As we anticipate the 2nd edition of this brilliant initiative, I want to share a few learning points and economic insights from my vantage point as a business strategist:

📈 Economic Advisory & Learning Points:

  • The Commercialization Gap: Nigeria is not short on innovation; we are short on commercialization. For our economy to pivot from consumption-heavy to production-driven, we must bridge the gap between academic research and market-ready products.
  • Mentorship is Capital: Financial capital will burn quickly without human capital. Young founders need seasoned operators who can help them navigate corporate governance, supply chains, and go-to-market strategies.
  • Tertiary Institutions as Economic Hubs: Universities must evolve from being just centers of learning to becoming the primary incubators of our nation’s MSMEs.

This is exactly where we step in at COINBOX LIMITED.

We recognize that transitioning from a brilliant pitch to a sustainable, scalable enterprise requires a robust ecosystem. Through our specialized Accelerator and Incubator Programs, we partner with institutions, founders, and innovators to transform raw ideas into viable, market-dominating businesses. From capacity building and digital transformation (via tools like our AI-powered Syncra ERP) to investment readiness and market access, we ensure that innovation meets execution.

To the students of Lead City University who pitched a year ago: keep building. The market is waiting for you.

I am eagerly looking forward to the disruptive ideas the 2nd edition will bring!

To my network: What do you think is the biggest hurdle young Nigerian innovators face when trying to move their ideas from the campus to the corporate market? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇
